Flexcel NX plates Polyester backing thickness

Postby Ali » Mon Dec 02, 2019 1:32 pm

Hello everyone
I have a question that might sound dumb but I am going to ask it anyway.

We are using 1.14mm NX plates and are having problems with distortion. I think the problem is because of the number we are using in the formula for the thickness of the polyester backing of the plate. I have looked into some of the literature that Kodak has provided and in that document it says their backing thickness is 0.188mm. I have made a test file that I placed several 30Cm long rulers in it. Then I calculated the distortion and K factor using different polyester backing thicknesses and made the plate and printed it and measured it. The results are as follows.

Polyester thickness . K Factor .
0.188 . 5.9816

Printed result was not correct

The thickness that produced correct result meaning 30Cm printed exactly 30Cm was Polyester thickness 0.107 and K Factor of 6.4905
I cannot get my mind around this why the formula is not working and I have to do guse go with trial and error to find the K Factor.

Any ideas.

Hi Ali, hope you're doing well!

http://flexoexchange.com/tools/flexo-di ... lator.html

This is a good place to start, enter your thickness at .045" and select the gear pitch and teeth you want to use.

They don't have a pre filled chart for your thickness but you could easily make a spreadsheet of your own with the cylinders in your inventory. Keep that on file and give to your operator.

Let me know how it works out.

Hi Ali,

I am sending you a chart for both backing thicknesses; 0.188 and 0.107.

I confirmed that 0.188 backing and 5.9816 K-factor are consistent with each other. In the US, that would be 0.007" backing on a 0.045" plate.

I also confirmed that compatibility of your numbers, 0.107 and 6.4905. Those correlate to 0.004" backing on a 0.045" plate.

Have you taken a piece of backing off of a plate and measured the thickness? If not, do so and let us know.
