AI file conversion to PDF

Postby dsm » Thu May 26, 2011 8:22 am

We have issues when converting an AI file to PDF. Characters in the AI file will bold and increase in size when converted to a PDF. These characters only change in the file on screen but they will print out fine. Is this a normal file conversion problem or can it be fixed? We are getting tired of telling our customers that the PDF looks bad but if you print the file out it is fine. This is not a new problem it has been happening for a long time.

Any help would be great.

Yeah, I've noticed that randomly with AI > PDF conversions. You can try converting the text to paths before saving the PDF.. but that is an extra step that needs to be done each time. The problem probably lies with the your customers monitor more than it is an Illustrator Problem though... kinda tough to predict how others view PDFs.

Outline the text and make it a vector graphic. In Illustrator, Select all, Text > Create Outlines. This will solve your font problem.

The problem most likely arises from Acrobat settings. In preferences, page display, there is a setting that says "Enhance Thin Lines". If that is checked, Acrobat will make some characters look fatter. Uncheck that box and all will look fine.
