Distortion: Flexo plate vs Engraved cylinder

Postby SambaFlexer » Sat Dec 16, 2017 7:08 am

Hi,

Can someone explain to me exactly why an engraved cylinder does not need to be distorted?

And why exactly why a flexo setup, with plate and sticky back, does have to be distorted?

Hi,

My understanding is you are increasing the outside diameter of the bare cylinder. To compensate for the larger diameter you have to distort it by a percentage based on the plate thickness.

Gravure cylinders are made to specific specs and repeats.

It is all about total outside diameter , which determines the pitch / pull .
Therefor your total plate , sticky back , and mandril/sleeve or cylinder , have to add up to the required diameter ,
to give you your required pull . Since there is no plate nor sticky back to contend with for an engraved sleeve ,
one therefor will not distort the engraved sleeve or cylinder .
Very basic distortions for flexo are
45thou -6mm
67thou -10mm
100thou -14mm
112thou -16mm
