ECRM filmsetter help

Postby ArtSteve » Wed May 19, 2010 8:58 am

We are using a ECRM Mako 46 with ECRM RIP 5.1a on Mac OS 9. Our gradients are not coming out smooth. The "banding" is irregular and looks the same even if the image is turned 90 degrees. We would like to be able to determine if it is a software problem (requiring a new RIP) or a hardware/mechanical problem. A radial gradient also appears "unsmooth". Thanks!

Postscript Level 2 devices only have 256 shades of gray... so banding will be more evident. Upgrading to a level three device utilizes Adobes 12 bit screening alogorithms and 4096 levels of gray, so banding is greatly decreased. If however this banding is a new problem, you need to try all the usual suspects: Check device resolution, Correct PPD installation, Make sure front end is sending correct screening descpription, Make sure the file (vector or bitmap) is correct size and set-up etc.
